How we started
2013 - 2014
The Abernethy Dare
In October 2013 my wife Lindsay and I ran our first independent mountain bike event in the village of Abernethy. Over 50 competitors came and tackled the 30 checkpoint orienteering event set in a 100 Sq km area. It was so successful we ran it again in 2014 and attracted nearly 100 riders to take on the now infamous “Abernethy Dare”
2015 - 2016
In 2014 we began Team Terraventure, recruiting Crispin Hoult a local endurance racer, we raced at 10 Under The Ben, the premier UK 10hr endurance event based at the Fort William. We brought home 2nd place in the team event!
2016 - 2017
Mountain Bike Tandeming
A bike made for two!
We started racing MTB Tandem at Marathon events in the UK in a two year program of events culminating in the largest MTB Tandem race in the world. In October 2017 we set off on 4000km road trip, in the new TerraVenture race van, to the south of France. We competed against 170 tandem crews over the phenomenal Le Roc course, coming home 8th in our category.
2017 - 2018
Finding inspiration for an adventure is never hard in Scotland. It has lead us on many excellent trips including 2017’s unsupported, 345km, 4294m Asc, Coast to Coast. A totally awesome MTB bike packing expedition over and through the Scottish mountains!
I started racing mountain bikes when they started arriving in Northern Ireland in the late 80’s. Youth racing took off and my folks and I toured the race circuit north and south of the border for six years. Great old school trails and some amazing fluorescent lycra to make sure those memories never fade!
Leaving Northern Ireland to move to Scotland opened up a treasure chest of new outdoor sports and pursuits. That meant I left the bike behind for a few years and learned to ski and snowboard, rock climb and canoe.
I finished my design degree and moved away to the Highland village of Arrochar and worked as an outdoor education instructor in the summer and on the mountain for the ski season.
I then committed to “Lowland life” for a decade, serving 10 years in the emergency services which gave me the opportunity to compete in the World Police and Fire Games in 2013. I had my career best performance and came home with a Bronze Medal.
Now I am doing that same youth race circuit again but for my own teenage son. In the past 25 years of racing and working in the outdoors I have had a great many roles, Competitor – UK and International, Teacher, Supporter, Promoter, Sponsor, Medic, Negotiator, Photographer, Event Organiser, Graphic and Web Designer, Mechanic, Tandem Pilot and most important of all the humble water bottle holder. I have a passion for it all and TerrraVenture is the embodiment of that passion.
